About the Plastic Surgery Department

The Plastic Surgery Department at Sahlgrenska University Hospital is the only plastic surgery unit in the Västra Götaland Region (VGR). We offer top diagnostic methodologies and treatments in numerous fields of plastic surgery, including craniofacial surgery, cleft-lip-palate surgery, breast reconstruction, microsurgery, vascular malformations, advanced skin cancer and gender-affirming surgeries. Daily, we have 4 operation theatres, 1 theatre for minor surgeries in local anesthesia, and 2 outpatient clinics. Patients can be admitted in the children’s ward, in the adults’ ward, or in the day-surgery ward. We have a total of 106 employees: 17 specialist plastic surgeons, and 6 residents in plastic surgery.

About the service of gender-affirming surgery

Currently, we are receiving 120 new referrals for patients with Gender Dyspohria per year. We offer all gender-affirming surgeries, such as facial feminizing surgery, chest-contouring surgeries for persons Assigned-Male-At-Birth and for persons Assigned-Female-At-Birth, feminizing and masculinizing genital reconstructions (including penile-inversion vaginoplasty, bowel vaginoplasty, metaidoioplasty, free- and pedicled-flaps phalloplasties). We work closely with other specialties from our University Hospital, such as mental health professionals, urologists, general surgeons, gynecologists, etc.

Our gender team is also productive in terms of research, with a high international profile that includes participation in several conferences per year, and close collaborations with other Gender Units around the world, for both clinical improvements and research.

We are following the Standards of Care of the World Professional Association for Transgender Care; thus, we are keen to update our routines and implement new procedures. We are in close contact, and we assist the Swedish National Board of Health and Welfare to develop national guidelines. Furthermore, the same National Board of Health and Welfare has designated VGR as one of the 3 Swedish centers who should offer National Highly Specialized Care for Gender Dysphoria and, within the healthcare services offered within VGR, our Department of Plastic Surgery has been designated as the responsible unit for offering Gender-Affirming surgical procedures. Thus, due to the increased requests, to the available economic resources, and to the task assigned by the National Board of Health and Welfare, we need to recruit one more surgeon to our gender team.

As a doctor with us, you will be able to develop both clinically and academically; under the supervision of our senior surgeons, you will oversee patients, from pre-op consultations, to performing surgery, to following-up patients post-operatively. You will be required to conduct research in the field of gender-affirming treatments; finally, you will assist with the management and organization of our routines.

Competency requirements

You are a licensed physician, who specializes in plastic surgery and has a specific interest in gender-affirming surgery. You also have ambitions to conduct research, and possibly to enroll in  a PhD program. We also believe that specialists in gynecology, general surgery, or urology may be suitable candidates and that a specialist training in plastic surgery can begin simultaneously with employment.

Form of employment

Starting in the autumn of 2023, this will be a limited-term (9-month) position that will then be converted to a permanent position. Full-time 40 hours/week.
